The department was initially started with Intermediate Course, subsequently Degree Course (pass) was opened and the Honours Course in Botany was started in 1965. At present there are 15 seats for new entrants to Botany, Honours Course. The Honours Course is going on at present in the day section and the Pass Course is in the morning section.

The eminent persons who taught in this department were Prof. Dr. S.N. Bhaduri, M.Sc., Ph.D.(Lond.); Dr. A.K. Dutta, M.Sc., Ph.D.; Dr. R. Prasad, M.Sc., Ph.D. and so on.

At present the student (Hons.) : teacher ratio is 3:1. The result of University Examinations for last few years reveals that the percentage of first class from this department is 75 on an average.

After passing from this department and obtaining higher qualifications the students were absorbed in different Universities and Colleges in teaching posts. Many are working as Scientists. There is opening for the students to work in forest services and other services at state or national level.

As in the past the present teachers are also engaged in different research activities. At present an U.G.C. sponsored minor research project is running under Dr. S. Bhattacharya.

The PG Course

It is the only college under the University of Burdwan that offer Post Graduation course in Botany from the academic session 2007 – 2008. At present there is a provision of fifteen students for the admission in PG Course in Botany. The college at present offers two special papers, i.e., Plant Physiology, Biochemistry and Mycology & Plant Pathology in PG Botany.
