The Department of Political Science is one of the leading departments with Post-graduate section. Full fledged Post-graduate teaching had its origin in 1966.The Department can rightfully claim a pioneering role in this regard under the Burdwan University.

Many illustrious teachers eminent in their own spheres had served the Department at different points of time, thereby leaving behind a rich legacy.Some of them are Dr. Upendranath Ghosal, Dr. Rameshchandra Ghosh, Dr. Sovanlal Mukherjee, Dr. Samirendranath Ray, Dr. Amal Kumar Mukherjee, Dr. Ashoke Kumar Mukhopadhyay, Dr. Radharaman Chakraborty, Dr. Arun Kumar Banerjee, Dr. Prasanta Roy, Prof. Prasanta Kumar Ghosh, Dr. Rakhari Chatterjee, Prof. Raghuvir Chakraborty, Prof. Asoke Mustafi, to name a few.

Departmental Seminars and Memorial Lectures are held regularly. Teachers of different Universities and Colleges deliver lectures to the benefit of students and teachers alike. These seminars help them keep abreast of contemporary political issues.

The Department has to its credit the publication of three volumes ” FOCUS INDIA ” highlighting the socio-political scenarioof contemporary India. The faculty members are also engaged in academic pursuits including publication of different sorts in notable journals, magazines etc. They also actively participate in different seminars both at state and national level.

Academic pursuits apart, the Department has also undertaken many co-curricular activities like organizing Youth Parliament to train students for future leadership, conducting eco-tours to generate environmental awareness, visiting Parliament to have a first hand knowledge of Parliamentary proceedings.

Our students have a consistent record of brilliant academic performance both at Under Graduate and Post Graduate levels. Student teachers ratio at present stands at 5:1 for Honours and 5.7:1 for M.A. Course.

The Departmant has eight posts including one for Professor (WBSES).
