Department of Hindi


The department of Hindi has been started in 1982 in the Hooghly Mohsin college. Dr. S.N.Pandey, Asst. Professor in linguistic of Sanskrit college, Kolkata was the first part-time lecturer to have started teaching in Hindi from 8th February 1982. Later on, this post was sanctioned by government from September 1984.

From February 1982 to September 2005, only one part-time teacher was available to teach Hindi. The part-time lecturers who tendered their services were Dr.S.N.Pandey, Sree Ram Yadav,Vijay Bharti, Hrishikesh Singh, Ranjana Sharma and Dr. Sanjay Jaiswal respectively. On September 2005, a post from Bengali department of Hooghly Mohsin College converted into the full time post of Hindi department and Dr. Sheonath Pandey, Reader in Hindi, Presidency College, Kolkata was transferred to this post.

At present Dr. Pandey is professor and head of the department of Hindi in Hooghly Mohsin College. Dr. Pandey is an eminent scholar of Hindi linguistic & literature. His two books ‘Sampradayvad aur Hindi katha sahitya (criticism)’ and ‘Pracheen aur madhyakaleen Hindi kavya’ were appreciated in Hindi world. He has also contributed a lot by being co-editor of many famous literary books. His articles are published in famous journals and magazines regularly. He is a member of editorial board of a reputed Hindi literary magazine ‘Samkaleen Srijan’. He is also a reputed research guide. Five M.Phil. and one P.hD. degree has been awarded successfully under his supervision.

After being transferred from Darjeeling Govt. College in April 2012, Dr. Chakradhar Pradhan joined the department of Hindi of Hooghly Mohsin College as an assistant professor on the post that got vacant after Dr. Sheonath Pandey joined the post of professor.

Dr. Pradhan is a reputed Scholar of Hindi as well as Oriya. His two books ‘Madhyakaleen Hindi aur Oriya Ram kavya’ and ‘Sakchhatkar mein Dr. Siya Ram Tiwari’ were really appreciated. His articles are published in many famous journals and magazines with time.

The department successfully organized a state level seminar on 22nd September, 2012 in association with the department of Urdu on ‘Human values in the writings of Premchand and Manto’
