Sanskrit was introduced as a Honours subject in the college in 1909. Since then the department has blossomed gradually to be a prominent faculty under the Burdwan University. Many eminent teachers including Late Dinesh Chandra Bhattacharya, Late Kalicharan Sastri, Late Bisnupada Bhattacharya, Late Nanilal Sen, Late Herambanath Chatterji Sastri, Late Suresh Chandra Banerji, Late Kalidas Bhattacharya et al have contributed to its prosperity over time. Its list of alumni is also illustrious. Students like Late Haridas Singha Roy, Late Chinmoyee Chatterji, Prof. Dipak Chattopadhyay, Sri Animesh Bhattacharya, to name a few, have made the department glorious.

Two teachers have earned the Ph.D degrees and another one is undertaking the course.

The students have always been its pride. It is notable that two recent students namely, Smt. Jana Ganguly and Smt. Sukanya Das had not only become the University toppers in the subject, but also secured highest marks in the Humanities Stream in the University in the year 1994 and 1995 respectively. Besides, each year more than 50% of the students get first class marks in the University examinations. In the last year the percentage rose to 80. The Department records no unsuccessful student so far.

The department always runs with full capacity of the students. This year the no. of Hons Students (Three years taken together) is 74 while the number of General Course students is 160. They are fed by a rich Seminar Library.
