Economics was introduced as a separate subject of Honours teaching in the college in the 1950s as previously it was taught with Political Science. Since then the Department has blossomed gradually to be a prominent center of learning under Burdwan University.
Many eminent teachers have contributed towards its prosperity over time. Its list of alumni is also impressive. Presently the department has five teachers, three of them at the Reader position. The Department has a rich seminar library meant for honours students.
Students have been its pride. In each year 25 to 30 percent of the students get first class marks in the University Examinations. In 2002, a student from the department became the University topper in the final examination. In spite of the frustrating current trend of remaining vaccant seats in Economics Honours in different Colleges, exceptional picture is observed in this College where considerable nuber of students take admission and acheive glorious results in both B.Sc.(Hons.) and B.A.(Hons.) in Economics.
