History
- The Department started functioning in 1909.
- Grew into an Honours Department in 1919.

Flagged off in 1909 to teach only Undergraduate Pass course, it grew into a full-fledged Honours department in 1919. Teaching of History in this Department has a long and glorious past. Among the renowned professors were personalities like Prof. Bipin Behari Sen, Prof. Nirmal Chandra Sinha, Prof. Haridas Mukherjee, Prof. Hosenur Rahman, to name only a few. Prof. E.F. Oaten and Prof. K. Zakhariah, two eminent historians, served as principals of the college.
Among the noted alumni of the department were Narendranath Bhattacharya and Dipak Das. Both of them became revered scholar in ancient Indian History.
About 14% secure first class marks on an average. The Department admits 30 students to the Honours course. Student – Teacher ratio is currently 7.5:1. The Department has a rich seminar library meant for Honours students.
