The Department started functioning in 1836. PG Course started from 2006 – 2007 session. English is offered both as an Honours & an elective subject to the UG students.

The English Department of Hooghly Mohsin College is as old as the College itself. Many an illustrious teacher was associated with its department since its start in 1836. The department produced countless scholars and distinguished persons over the years. Some of the noted teachers who had contributed to the enrichment of the department are Taraknath Sen, Sadananda Chakraborty, Manjugopal Bhattacharya, Girija Sankar Bhattacharya, Sirajul Rahman, Pareshnath Ghosh, Parimal Gupta. The list is evidently inadequate. Notable students of the department are too many to count.

The teachers of the department are engaged in serious intellectual activities. They regularly contribute to many Journals of distinction, and participate in seminars as speakers both at national and international levels. They have important publications to their credit.

The activities of the department are not confined only to the routine classroom teaching/learning processes. It organizes seminars at intervals in which teachers and students of the department participate.

The PG Course

The Department of English started its PG Course from 2006 with an initial capacity of 30 seats. The semester system has been introduced from the academic year 2007- 2008. It consists of 4 semesters along with internal assessment. Students are required to submit term papers under the supervision of teachers.
