In the glorious history of Hooghly Mohsin College, the Department of Bengali has a distinctive place. In the begining, Hooghly Mohsin College was a centre of studies in Oriental Languages in Bengal. Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian, Bengali and Urdu have been taught here as important subjects. Many brilliant students have emerged from the Department of Bengali to serve the nation in the varied fields of public life.
It is on record that well-known Bengali Writer like, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay (Writer), Akshoy Ch. Sarkar (Writer), Dwijendra Lal Ray (Poet & Dramatist), Muhammad Shahidullah (Linguist) were students of this Department. Many illustrious teachers have adorned this Department. They are Kalipada Sen (Ishan Scholar), Dr. Bhabatosh Datta, Prof. Baburam Prasad Banerji, Prof. Syamal Kumar Chatterji, to name a few. The Department has a consistently good academic record every year a couple of First Classes are secured in Honours.
Teachers of the department are actively engaged in research work in different areas of Bengali Language and Literature. At present, each Honours class comprises 40 students . There is a close and intimate relationship between the teachers and the taught.
